Honouring Greg Millan: A Life Dedicated to Men’s Health

The Australian Men’s Health Forum (AMHF) is mourning the loss of one of its most influential figures, Greg Millan, who passed away last week.

Greg’s impact on men’s health in Australia spans nearly three decades, and his legacy will continue to shape the field for generations to come.

Greg was a founding force in the development of a coordinated men’s health sector in Australia. His leadership was instrumental in the formation of the Coalition of Men’s Organisations and later the Australian Men’s Health Forum itself. His involvement with AMHF stretched back to the first National Men’s Health Gathering in Melbourne in 1995- a milestone event that helped spark a national conversation about the unique health challenges faced by men and boys.

Few people have shaped AMHF's direction more than Greg. Serving for more years on the Board than anyone else, Greg held numerous leadership roles, including President and Vice President. Even after officially retiring from the Board earlier this year, his presence and guidance remained deeply felt.

“Greg was an indomitable force in driving better outcomes for men’s health,” AMHF CEO Glen Poole said. “There was no one better informed or more committed to the cause.

“So much of what Greg has done for men’s health over the years has been a selfless act of generosity. We cannot put a value on the thousands of hours of time, knowledge and wisdom he has given to AMHF and the broader men’s health sector.”

Greg, a meditation teacher, ran workshops and training on men’s health and put together a free quarterly bulletin called emale covering a broad range of international and local topics. “Greg had a remarkable passion for helping men and boys, and of bringing people together and supporting new voices in the field. This is an especially sad time,” said AMHF President, Gillian Hunt.

Greg played a key role in guiding AMHF through its transition into a Commonwealth-funded peak body in 2017, serving as one of nine directors entrusted with steering the organisation into a new era. With Greg’s retirement from the Board last December, he was the last of those original directors to step down, marking the end of an important chapter in the Forum’s history.

In recognition of Greg’s profound impact, AMHF has announced it will create a new national award in his honour. The Greg Millan Men’s Health Award will celebrate individuals who show outstanding dedication to advancing the health and wellbeing of men and boys across Australia. The Award will be made at the 30th anniversary of the National Men’s Health Gathering in October.

Greg Millan is remembered not just as a colleague, but as a mentor, a friend, and a tireless advocate. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Greg’s family, friends, and all those who knew and loved him. His legacy will live on in the lives he touched and the work he inspired.
